Hippolyta said this to Diana right before she started her race. This was said for two different reasons. The first being the Diana is a princess and there are high standards for her and the second one is that Diana is not a battle proven Amazon. This means that she is not very well respected or thought of as the other Amazons equals. Due to this Diana needed to win this race or face ridicule for evcen trying.
since Diana knew the pessure on her to win I was surprised that Diana decided to go and rescue Alia, when she knew that she should have simply let her die in the storm. I believe that it is due to the fact that Diana grew up on a island that idolises heroes and that this made Diana feel the need to go and save the innocent girl. It could also be because Diana wants a chance at glory.
